just to learn the enormity of what is soon to come, i looked through the ams job listings for postdocs, snobbishly chose schools which sounded nice, and came up with ..
.. 23.
wow. even choosing snobbishly, there are already 23. i think i'm in for a very long fall term ..

Suppose that each of those 23 schools will hire 5 postdocs on average; this makes 115 positions. If I remember correctly, the number of math PhDs awarded each year has four digits. Conclusion: it helps to choose less snobbishly.
Uncle Leo is correct. You are off by a factor of 4-5, including some tenure-track at Liberal Arts schools. A relatively accurate number of math Ph.D.s awarded each year can be found in the Feb. edition of the AMS Notices. Just be thankful mathjobs makes life somewhat easier.
i concur. when it comes to applications, snobbery is not the way to go. \:
